性善 Nature is Good
Every person is born with the four sprouts 四端 — compassion, shame, deference, and a sense of right and wrong — and virtue is cultivated from within by nurturing them.
「仁义礼智,非由外铄我也,我固有之也。」 Benevolence, righteousness, ritual, and wisdom are not welded onto me from outside — they are inherently mine.
性恶 Nature is Self-Interested
Human nature is self-interested and prone to disorder; goodness is deliberate artifice 伪 — ritual, law, and teaching straighten the crooked wood into something useful.
「人之性恶,其善者伪也。」 Human nature is self-interested; its goodness is deliberate artifice.
