Principle 01
The Cycle of the Five Powers 五德终始
Each dynasty rules by one power or phase (德), and rises and falls as the phases conquer one another in a fixed order — 「五德从所不胜」, the succession follows the order of conquest (earth→wood→metal→fire→water). The Yellow Emperor was earth, Yu was wood, Tang was metal, King Wen was fire; the next dynasty must therefore be water, and the Qin claimed exactly that. The mechanism is to make history computable: dynastic change is not fortune but a phase-transition in a known sequence, so the present can be read as a position in the cycle and the next turn predicted.
Principle 02
Verify Small, Extrapolate Far 必先验小物,推而大之
Zou Yan's epistemology is induction plus extrapolation: first verify the pattern on small, near, checkable things (必先验小物), then push it outward to the vast and remote, 「至于无垠」— to the boundless, even to 天地未生, before heaven and earth were born. The mechanism is that a pattern confirmed at human scale is treated as a law of all scales, and the imagination is licensed to run where observation cannot. It is the boldest extrapolative method in early Chinese thought — and the reason his critics called his words 闳大不经 (vast and untrammeled by convention).
Principle 03
The Great Nine Continents 大九州
China — the Red County of the Divine Continent (赤县神州) — is only one of nine continents, itself one of nine such regions, so the known world is 1/81 of the whole. The mechanism is radical frame enlargement: take the map everyone treats as the world and demote it to a sample, then reconstruct the whole by scaling the sample's logic outward (推而远之). It is a cosmological application of his extrapolative method, and a standing warning against building a theory of everything from the visible fraction.
Principle 04
Reading the Waxing and Waning 深观阴阳消息
Yin and yang are not static opposites but phases of a single cycle that wax and wane (消息) into each other; to observe deeply is to read the present as a phase-position, not a state. Every peak is already waning, every trough already waxing, so the diagnostic question is not "what is happening" but "where are we in the cycle, and which way is it moving". The mechanism is to monitor the direction of change (the waxing and waning) rather than the level — the observational basis on which the whole Five-Powers system is built.
