Principle 01
The Daily Audit 三省吾身
「吾日三省吾身:为人谋而不忠乎?与朋友交而不信乎?传不习乎?」Three fixed questions, run on a fixed cadence, covering three domains: work (did I do my utmost for those I serve?), relationships (was my word reliable?), learning (did I practice what I was taught?). The mechanism is what makes it an audit rather than rumination: concrete criteria convert open-ended introspection, which drifts, into a checklist that produces findings. The third question, 传不习乎, is the oldest statement of the transfer-of-training problem — hearing a teaching is not the same as being changed by it.
Principle 02
The Heavy Burden 弘毅
「士不可以不弘毅,任重而道远。仁以为己任,不亦重乎?死而后已,不亦远乎?」The scholar must be broad and resolute because the burden is heavy and the road long — 仁 is taken as one's own charge, and it ends only at death. The mechanism is identity-based commitment: a task can be finished or abandoned, but a burden carried as 己任 restructures every choice downstream. 弘 keeps the scope of concern wide; 毅 keeps the duration of effort open. Together they convert a moral goal into a standing condition of the self.
Principle 03
Ritual as Social Memory 慎终追远
「慎终追远,民德归厚矣。」Care for endings — funerals, farewells, closures — and trace back to distant sources, and the virtue of the people grows thick. The mechanism is signaling across time: a community that treats endings with care and remembers origins tells its members that bonds are not disposable and contributions are not forgotten. Ritual here is infrastructure, not ceremony — a society's long-term memory, externalized in repeatable form. Where endings are handled carelessly, trust thins, because everyone can see how the story ends.
Principle 04
Walking on Thin Ice 战战兢兢
When Zengzi lay dying he called his disciples to look at his hands and feet — intact — and quoted the Book of Songs: 「战战兢兢,如临深渊,如履薄冰。」Trembling, as at the edge of a deep abyss, as on thin ice. Only now, he said, could he be sure of having escaped. The mechanism is vigilance as a lifetime posture rather than an emergency response: the audit runs continuously, because one unguarded step can undo a whole record. It is the long-horizon version of the daily 三省 — the same loop, stretched across decades.
