Principle 01
Nature vs. Artifice 性伪之分
「人之性恶,其善者伪也。」The diagnostic cut is between what is given (性 — appetite, self-interest, the raw pull of desire) and what is made (伪 — goodness, culture, the engineered self). The mechanism is expectation management: expect no more spontaneous goodness from raw human material than straightness from warped wood, and design accordingly. 「故圣人化性而起伪」— the sages transformed nature and raised up artifice. The power of the model is that it locates the lever: nature cannot be argued with, but artifice — institutions, habits, training — can be built.
Principle 02
Ritual as Shaping Technology 礼
「礼者,所以正身也。」Ritual, for Xunzi, is not ceremony but social technology: the mold into which raw human material is pressed until the shape becomes second nature. His metaphors are manufacturing — 「陶人埏埴而为器」, the potter kneads clay into vessels; steamed wood becomes a wheel that never straightens again. The mechanism is structured repetition: 礼 pre-decides the right response for recurring situations, so conduct is shaped by design rather than by willpower in the moment. Civilization is the artifact; ritual is the production process.
Principle 03
Accumulation 积
「不积跬步,无以至千里;不积小流,无以成江海。」Virtue and knowledge are stock variables built grain by grain — 「积善成德」, accumulated goodness becomes virtue, and the sage's mind is assembled, not bestowed. The mechanism rules out leaps: 「骐骥一跃,不能十步;驽马十驾,功在不舍」— the thoroughbred's single jump covers less than ten paces; the slow nag makes it by not stopping. 「锲而不舍,金石可镂」— carve without quitting, and metal and stone can be engraved. Talent is a rate; accumulation is the integral.
Principle 04
Master Heaven and Use It 制天命而用之
「天行有常,不为尧存,不为桀亡。」Heaven's processes run on constant patterns — they do not exist for the sage-king Yao nor perish for the tyrant Jie. From this Xunzi draws the activist conclusion: 「从天而颂之,孰与制天命而用之?」— better to master Heaven's patterns and use them than to follow and praise them. The mechanism is disenchantment as engineering: nature is stripped of moral authority and converted into a resource of regularities to be modeled and exploited. 「应之以治则吉」— respond to the pattern with order and you get good fortune. This is the proto-scientific stance inside Confucianism.
