Mohism Universal Care Empiricism
Core Proposition · 核心命题
「言必有三表。」
"Words must have three tests." No doctrine is accepted on authority or elegance — a claim must be anchored in the precedent of the sage kings 「上本之于古者圣王之事」, checked against the evidence of the people's eyes and ears 「下原察百姓耳目之实」, and verified by the benefit it produces when applied as policy 「发以为刑政,观其中国家百姓人民之利」. Mozi's method is consequentialist universalism: impartial care (兼爱) for all people is the design goal, empirical testing is the verification procedure, and he works like what he was — an engineer and master of fortification who treated beliefs as structures that must bear load.
Mental Models · 思维原则
Principle 01
Impartial Care 兼爱
Mozi diagnoses all disorder as a failure of scope: states attack states, families usurp families, people injure people, because care stops at a boundary — 「亏人自利」, damaging others to benefit oneself. His remedy is not more feeling but a wider perimeter: 「视人之国若视其国,视人之家若视其家,视人之身若视其身」— regard others' states, families, and persons as your own. The mechanism is structural: if harming another is harming oneself, aggression becomes self-contradictory. Against the Confucian graded love (爱有差等), Mozi insists partiality is not a compromise but the engine of the very conflict it claims to manage.
Principle 02
Condemn Offensive War 非攻
Mozi argues against war not by appeal to virtue but by accounting. In the Feigong chapter he runs the scale test: one who steals peaches is condemned, one who kills one person owes one death, one who kills a hundred owes a hundred deaths — 「今至大为不义攻国,则弗知非,从而誉之,谓之义」— yet the greatest crime, attacking a state, is praised as righteousness. Moral language is corrupted by scale; Mozi applies the same ledger at every magnitude. Even for the victor the arithmetic fails: farmers leave the fields, craftsmen the workshops, and the cost of the campaign exceeds the value of the land taken.
Principle 03
The Three Tests 三表法
The Three Tests are Mozi's verification protocol for any claim: anchor (本) — does it match the recorded deeds of the sage kings; trace (原) — does it match the evidence of the people's senses 「下原察百姓耳目之实」; apply (用) — does it produce measurable benefit when issued as policy 「观其中国家百姓人民之利」. A belief is a hypothesis, not a possession: its truth is its verified consequence. This is an early empirical-pragmatic method built by a craftsman who knew that a wall either stands or falls, whatever you believe about it.
Principle 04
Frugality and Merit 节用 · 尚贤
Mozi applies the benefit test to institutions: every expenditure that does not add to the people's benefit is waste — 「去其无用之费」— and he attacks lavish funerals and three-year mourning (节葬) as labor extracted from the living to serve the dead. The positive counterpart is 尚贤: 「官无常贵,民无终贱」— no office is permanently noble, no commoner permanently lowly; promote the capable regardless of birth. His own school practiced it: the Mohist order was led by a 鉅子 chosen by merit, drawn from artisans and soldiers, disciplined to 「赴火蹈刃」— walk into fire and tread on blades — for the common benefit.
Key Passage ·
"Therefore words must have three tests. What are the three? Mozi said: there is that which anchors them, that which traces them, and that which applies them. Where do we anchor them? Above, in the deeds of the ancient sage kings. Where do we trace them? Below, in examining the evidence of the people's eyes and ears. Where do we apply them? In issuing them as laws and governance, and observing whether they bring benefit to the states, families, and people."

Modern Mapping · 现代映射
Engineering · 工程
Mozi was a fortification engineer, and his epistemology is engineering epistemology: a doctrine is a load-bearing structure, and the Three Tests are its stress certificate — precedent (has this form stood before), sensory evidence (what do measurements and witnesses say), applied benefit (does it hold under real load). In the Gongshu chapter he walks ten days to Chu and defeats the siege engineer Gongshu Pan in nine simulated assaults — 「子墨子之守圉有余」— his defenses still had surplus. The modern equivalent is the verification stack: literature review, user observation, production metrics. A belief that cannot say what 「中国家百姓人民之利」it must produce is decoration, not structure.
Strategy · 战略
Feigong's accounting is a theory of the winner's curse: offensive war — like price wars, hostile acquisitions, empire-building expansion — destroys more value than it captures even when it "wins", because the fields and workshops that produce the value are the casualties of the campaign. Mozi's scale test is a second tool: what is condemned as theft at one scale is celebrated as strategy at another, and the discipline is to apply the same ledger at every magnitude — a raid on a competitor's talent pool is still a raid. The strategist's question becomes Mozi's: after the campaign, is the people's benefit 「人民之利」greater, or only the ruler's map?
Organization · 组织
「官无常贵,民无终贱」— no office is permanently noble, no commoner permanently lowly — is Mozi's meritocracy clause, and the Mohist school was its proof of concept: leaders (鉅子) chosen by demonstrated capability rather than lineage, members recruited from the artisan and soldier classes, advancement tied to measurable contribution in virtue, speech, and governance. The mechanism is the removal of birthright from the promotion function, so that the organization's talent search covers its whole population rather than its aristocracy. Modern equivalents — structured interviews, rubric-based promotion, cases built from evidence rather than sponsorship — are Shangxian machinery: evaluate by observed output 「原察百姓耳目之实」, not by proximity to power.
Personal Practice · 个人修行
节用 is a personal audit protocol: every expenditure of money, time, or attention must answer one question — who benefits, and by how much? Mozi's target was ritual spending — lavish funerals, prolonged mourning, status display — labor 「去其无用之费」extracted from the living to feed appearances; the modern equivalents are credential purchases, status goods, and meetings that exist only to have existed. The rule is functional, not ascetic: spend fully on what bears load — health, craft, relationships — and cut without sentiment what does not, 「诸加费不加于民利者,圣王弗为」— whatever adds cost without adding benefit, the sage does not do. The budget becomes a moral instrument: a map of what you actually value, as opposed to what you perform.
