Economic Policy · 经济政策
Li Kui's granary is the ancestor of every counter-cyclical stabilizer: strategic reserves, commodity buffer stocks, price-band schemes, automatic fiscal stabilizers. The mechanism is identical — a pre-committed rule buys when the market price falls below a floor and sells when it rises above a ceiling, so neither producers nor consumers are destroyed by the swing. His core insight 「甚贵与甚贱,其伤一也」 says the damage is symmetric, so policy must act on both sides of the cycle, not only in the visible crisis. And because the rule is announced in advance, it steadies expectations before it ever trades a single bushel.
Platform Rules · 平台规则
The 《法经》's move — turn tacit custom into written, public code — is the exact problem of platform governance. When a platform's rules live in unwritten moderator judgment, they belong to whoever happens to enforce them, and users cannot plan; when rules are codified, versioned, and published, behavior becomes predictable and appeals become possible. Codification also disciplines the enforcer: a written rule constrains the platform itself, not only its users. The residual honesty required is Li Kui's own — his code survives only in fragments, a reminder that published rules outlive their author and are judged by later readers.
Organizational Design · 组织设计
「尽地力之教」 begins with an audit, not an exhortation: Li Kui measured the land, estimated the yield, and located the margin — three sheng per mu — where effort actually moves output. Modern operations work the same way: before setting targets, quantify the productive base and find the controllable margin (conversion rate, cycle time, utilization), then engineer incentives at exactly that margin. The failure mode he diagnoses is vague moralism — telling farmers to "do better" — where the instrument is arithmetic. Measure first; the policy is derived from the numbers, not from precedent or rhetoric.
Systems Thinking · 系统思维
Li Kui's state is a system with a safe operating band, and his institutions exist to hold it there: law keeps conduct inside its band, the granary keeps prices inside theirs. The systems insight is that stability is not the absence of disturbance but the presence of absorption — 「善为国者」 builds shock absorbers in peacetime, when no one is asking for them. The modern equivalent is redundancy and pre-committed circuit breakers: capacity installed before the failure, rules triggered automatically rather than negotiated during the panic. The test of the design is that the correction happens when no one is steering.
