School of Diplomacy Persuasion Strategy
Core Proposition ·
Opening and closing is the pivot of all persuasion: to open (捭) is to speak and draw the counterpart out; to close (阖) is to fall silent, withdraw, and observe. The persuader's work is diagnostic rather than rhetorical — read the hidden state behind the words, then open or close accordingly, and the frame of the conversation is yours. The received text is likely a later compilation and has long been read as a manual of manipulation; what survives that doubt is a coherent technology of influence.
Mental Models ·
Principle 01
Open and Close
Speech and silence are not moods but instruments: open to draw the counterpart's real position into the light, close to conceal your own and watch. Every exchange runs on this rhythm, and whoever sets the rhythm sets the terms.
Principle 02
Probe by Reversal
To make them speak, first be silent; to take, first give. Offer the opposite of what you seek — the counterpart moves to fill the vacuum you create, and in moving reveals himself. Reversal is the lever that pries loose information no direct question can extract.
Principle 03
Measure the Hidden
Read the counterpart at moments of extreme joy or extreme fear — the moments when the mask slips and the real interest shows. Estimation is the arithmetic of power: weigh his desires, fears, and dependencies before you speak, and your words land where he is actually standing.
Principle 04
The Hook-and-Pincer
Raise the counterpart up (飞), then clamp (箝): hand him an elevated position — a reputation, a title, a commitment he wants to own — and he is locked into acting consistently with it. Praise is a positioning device, not a compliment: once he accepts the identity you assign, refusing your proposal becomes a refusal of himself.
Key Passage ·
Opening and closing is the Way of heaven and earth — it is what moves yin and yang, what opens and shuts the four seasons, what transforms the ten thousand things.

Modern Mapping ·
Negotiation · 谈判
The Guiguzian negotiator treats the table as a diagnostic surface, and silence is the primary instrument. 「欲闻其声反默」 — to hear the other side's real position, go quiet after their opening and let them fill the void; uncomfortable silence reliably makes a counterpart bid against itself. What surfaces in that gap — deadlines, internal pressure, the walk-away almost named — is the actual negotiation, of which the stated position was only the cover. The discipline is rhythmic: open with a calibrated question, close into silence, and never mistake your own talking for progress.
Sales · 销售
Discovery selling is chuaimo (揣摩) with a calendar: a prospect's stated requirements are a mask, and masks slip at moments of extreme emotion — a budget shock (甚惧), a competitor's stumble, a quarter-end deadline (甚喜). 「揣情者,必以其甚喜之时」 — the real buying conversation happens there, not inside the scripted demo. The practitioner therefore times the ask to the moment the guard is down, and weighs (揣) the buyer's actual incentives — whose budget, whose fear — before naming a price. Deals close on the need revealed under pressure, not the one written in the RFP.
Intelligence · 情报
Fanying (反应) is the grammar of elicitation tradecraft. 「欲取反与」 — to take, first give: offer a deliberately wrong figure, and the counterpart's instinct to correct you surrenders the true one, a mechanism modern elicitors find far more reliable than direct questioning. 「欲高反下」 works the same way: play the student so the target performs the expert, then close into a silence the target feels obliged to fill. Every correction volunteered is intelligence the target believes he is withholding.
Leadership · 管理
Feiqian (飞箝) maps onto the management of reputations: assign a person an elevated identity in public — 「you are the one who never misses a ship date」 — and the pincer closes, because refusing the next hard deadline now means refusing the self you handed him. The mechanism is commitment-consistency: people move to align with the position they have been seen accepting. Used openly, this is how leaders build teams — the reputation precedes the behavior and pulls it upward. Used coldly, it is the manipulation the Guiguzi has always been accused of: the lock works whether or not the praise was true.
